Everyone loves road trips, but even the best of them can sometimes be a little boring. If you’re traveling with children, this can especially become an issue – there are only so many times in a row you can play Frozen before the kids start to get restless. That’s where the classic car games can come in handy. You don’t need an ipad or a DVD to play, just a car and miles of open roads. So, here are some of the best games you can play on long road trips this summer.

This is a classic game that involves looking out the window and searching for every letter of the alphabet on road signs outside. Things get really intense when you get to the letter Q. Hint: look to license plates to find the more obscure letters.

50 States

This is a great game for long road trips. Bring out a map and try to find a license plate from as many states as possible. Extra points for the furthest away states.

20 Questions

This is the rare road trip game that even adults can enjoy. Think of a place, or a celebrity, or a movie and have everyone else in the car ask questions until they can guess it. It’s a great and very competitive time waster.

I Spy

The most classic of all, I Spy still holds up as a very amusing road trip game. Adults and kids can work together to make this game a very fun time for everyone. It’s perfectly suited for the family SUV that’s crammed with luggage and all sorts of toys.

Another classic game, hangman usually needs a pen and paper but it is great to play in the backseat of a car. You can play for hours before you realize any time has passed.

 The Name Game

This is a great game for all the movie buffs and pop culture aficionados. The first starts by naming a celebrity. Then, the next person takes the first letter of the last name and has to come up with another celebrity beginning with that letter. For example: “Tom Hanks” would be followed by “Halle Berry” which would be followed by “Brian Williams.” If someone takes too long to come up with an answer, they are out.
